BEMER Young Riders Tour: Ansgar Holtgers Jr wins with the only clear round

(Hagen a.T.W.) Insiders say that a class without a jump-off can often be more exciting than a competition with many clear rounds and that is exactly what happened today in the sixth rating competition of the BEMER Young Riders Tour in Hagen a.T.W., Germany. Ansgar Holtgers Jr and Chanyon managed the only clear round over a technically demanding course.

28 competitors from seven nations started in the first round of the Young Riders Grand Prix with jump-off over 1.45m. Among them were the four successful members of the German team, who had won the Nations Cup the previous evening. The course, conceived by course designer Klaus Wilhelm Holle, turned out to be a challenge though, and spectators had to wait until the 21st starter before they could celebrate the first and only clear round. That feat was achieved by Ansgar Holtgers Jr riding for the USA on the Chacco Blue son Chanyon. “I knew there had been no clear rounds before me and I thought the time might be a bit tight for me. But I have so much confidence in my horse and felt that anything is possible. So far it has only happened to me once that I was the only one to go clear, but never in a Grand Prix — that is a cool feeling,” an excited Ansgar Holtgers Jr shared after the Grand Prix.

Sport partner with Olympic experience

The 18-year-old rider, who is based in Wellington, Florida, but also frequently competes in Europe, was able to benefit from the experience of his 15-year-old sport partner today. The Oldenburg gelding Chanyon is bred by Gestüt Lewitz and has been owned by Gut Einhaus LLC since 2021.  He was previously ridden by the Japanese rider Daisuke Fukushima at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. There, he achieved a great sixth place in the individual classification. Holtgers Jr trains with the Olympic rider and former German Champion Rene Tebbel. With Chanyon, he has already been able to show very good performances at international level this year in Wellington (USA) and Hohenkirchen – Hohen Wieschendorf. Today he added a victory in the BEMER Young Riders Tour series and thus 20 points in the current ranking.

Movement in the Ranking

Behind the guest from the USA, three young German talents lined up with four penalty points each. Second place went to Henry Munsberg from Hagen a.T.W. with his mare Nola Van St Maarten. Johanna Beckmann (Löningen) followed in third place with Emelie van de Mirania Stam, ahead of Marie Flick (Hagen a.T.W.) and DSP Charlott in fourth place. The other two four-fault rides came from Max Wachman (IRL) on Donegal and Oliver Pisarik (CZE) and Centoulago. The latter, thanks to his sixth place, can be pleased about a considerable “leap” upwards in the BEMER Young Riders Tour Ranking. Pisarik improves to 12th place thanks to the 10 points he earned today. Leon Brutsaert (BEL) unfortunately had to put up with two penalties and finished in 10th place. However, he moved up to fourth place in the overall ranking. The British rider Jessica Hewlett is still in the lead with 46 points.

The BEMER Young Riders Tour is now taking a short break. The next and penultimate stop will take place in Dielsdorf-Zurich, Switzerland, from 23-27 August.
