07 May BEMER Young Riders Tour: Royal Weekend for British Young Riders in Lamprechtshausen
(Lamprechtshausen) “My little hero”, Jessica Hewlett (GBR) calls her four-legged sport partner Ilmar HBC and the nimble chestnut stallion lived up to his name again today. The British pair set the best time of 38.12 seconds in the jump-off to win the third competition of the BEMER Young Riders Tour season 2023 at the CSIO Lamprechtshausen today.

30 riders had entered the Young Rider Grand Prix with jump-off over 1.45m. The Austrian show is one of the best youth sporting events in Europe and once again lived up to its reputation. Only five riders remained clear in the first round and qualified for the jump-off. Britain makes headlines this weekend mostly for the coronation of King Charles III, but the British showjumpers definitely wanted to add their own celebrations. Second and third place went to Hewlett’s teammates Red Morgan with Golia and Sophia Kelly in the saddle of Horinde H. The same line-up also won silver in the Young Riders Nations Cup two days ago and confirmed their great form this afternoon. Only a week ago Jessica Hewlett and the only nine-year-old Ilmar HBC, affectionately known as Kenny, had already been the best British pair in the Young Riders Grand Prix in Compiegne, France, with their third place. With today’s win, Hewlett has now increased her points tally in the BEMER Young Riders Tour to 35 ranking points and takes the lead for the time being.
Points chase continues
As in the qualification, the best Austrian rider was David Moser in fourth place. Unfortunately, he collected eight faults in the jump-off with Chocolat Blanc. Fifth and sixth place also went to the hosts: Marie Christine Sebesta (AUT) and Gaffney as well as Michelle Haab (AUT) & Jazoe van’t Steenpaal thus scored their first points in the BEMER Young Riders Tour. The winner of Thursday’s qualification, Ava Vernon (GBR), unfortunately had to accept a pole down in the first round with Volnay de Choc Z and ended up in seventh place. Joana Schildknecht fared similarly with Victor NN. However, the Swiss Champion collected another eight important points for the current BEMER Young Riders Tour Ranking for her eighth place and will certainly go home very satisfied. Schildknecht is already very familiar with the mode of the tour from last year and is one of the strongest contenders for the title of “Young Rider of the Year” this season.
The BEMER Young Riders Tour travels to Samorin next week. Slovakia’s ‘equestrian jewel’, the X-Bionic Sphere will host the 4th stop of the international show jumping series for U21 riders from 11 to 14 May. Slovakia is an up-and-coming equestrian nation and therefore the perfect location for the BEMER Young Riders Tour, which aims to give young talents extended starting opportunities at international shows in the future.
